For two people, the Cosori Lite 4-Qt: compact, 450°F and TechRadar’s top small pick. Cooking for one? The Instant Vortex Mini is quieter and about the footprint of a sheet of paper.

Small doesn’t mean weak.
Compact fryers here reach 400°F to 450°F, and the best of them run at 1,300 to 1,500 watts. What you give up is floor space, and in an air fryer floor space is capacity, because food crisps in a single layer. Size this one to your heaviest regular meal, not your lightest.

Cosori Lite 4-Quart Smart Air Fryer Model CAF-LI401S
The small fryer TechRadar rates best for couples: 4 quarts, 450°F, and a 10.8-inch-wide body.
Two chicken breasts and a side of broccoli in one go: that’s the Lite’s sweet spot. TechRadar picked it as its best small air fryer for individuals or couples, and the specs explain why. It packs the 1,500 watts and 450°F of a bigger machine into a body 10.8 inches wide and 13.6 deep that weighs 9 pounds.
Seven functions cover air fry, roast, bake, broil, reheat, dehydrate and keep warm, and the VeSync app adds remote control and voice assistants. Two limits to know: the timer maxes out at 60 minutes, and the basket is about 7.9 inches square. Cosori’s 2-year limited warranty makes a handy tiebreaker.

Instant Vortex Mini 2-Quart Air Fryer Model 140-3013-01 (aqua; other colors differ)
About the footprint of a sheet of letter paper, quiet, and simple to use.
Lay a sheet of letter paper on your counter. That’s roughly the Vortex Mini’s footprint (9 by 11.3 inches). Inside, 2 quarts holds about four cups of fries or a quarter chicken, according to Instant: one person’s dinner or a side for two.
TechRadar rates it the best budget small air fryer and one of the quietest it has tested, about as loud as a running fridge, and Engadget calls it the best small fryer on its list. It runs 1,300 watts up to 400°F. Instant’s Dutch store advises trimming package times by 15 to 20 percent, since it cooks fast for its size.

Dash Tasti-Crisp 2.6-Quart Air Fryer Model DCAF260 (ceramic version: DCAF26CM)
Consumer Reports’ recommended mini fryer, under a cubic foot overall, with a ceramic version.
Consumer Reports measured 2.4 quarts of usable space in this Dash, inside a body smaller than a cubic foot, and still placed it among the best small air fryers in its ratings with a CR Recommended badge. At 1,000 watts it has the gentlest power draw here, handy where circuits are shared.
Choose the Tasti-Crisp Ceramic (DCAF26CM) if you want to avoid PTFE nonstick; CR suggests it for exactly that reason. Controls are basic and the warranty runs one year, which CR notes is typical.
Ninja Crispi 4-in-1 Portable Glass Air Fryer Model FN101
Cook, store and reheat in the same glass dish, with no nonstick coating anywhere food touches.
For a couple who meal-preps, the Crispi’s party trick matters: you cook, store and reheat in the same borosilicate glass container. The 6-cup dish handles a single portion; the 4-quart one is enough for two, and Ninja says it fits a 4-pound chicken. Homes & Gardens’ reviewer says it’s the glass air fryer that changed her mind about the category.
The 1,500-watt pod reaches 450°F and offers four modes: Max Crisp, Air Fry, Bake and Recrisp. Downsides: glass is heavy and breakable, and you lift the pod off to shake or stir. For storage, the pod nests inside the container.
Two quarts suits one person. Four quarts is comfortable for two, which is why Cosori rates the Lite for two to four. If you cook for two and like leftovers, the 5-quart Ninja Air Fryer Pro is only half an inch wider than the Lite.
Measure height, not just width
Air fryers vent out the back and top. Cosori’s manuals ask for 5 inches of space behind and above, so a 12.8-inch-tall fryer wants about 18 inches below the cabinets, which is about what standard uppers allow. Pull it forward while it runs.
Mind shared circuits
Small fryers draw less: 1,000 watts for the Dash, 1,300 for the Vortex Mini, 1,500 for the Cosori Lite and Ninja Crispi. That helps in dorms, RVs and older kitchens, but check any dorm rules on cooking appliances first.
Think about where it lives
A small fryer that stores easily gets used more. The Crispi’s pod nests inside its glass container, and the Vortex Mini weighs little enough to move off the counter between uses.
Should you even buy an air fryer?
America’s Test Kitchen’s short, honest take on what an air fryer is good for. Handy if this is your first one.
About 4 quarts. That fits two portions in a single layer, which is how air fryers crisp best. Go to 5 quarts if you want leftovers or cook for guests.
Is a 2-quart air fryer too small?
Not for one person. Instant says its 2-quart Vortex Mini holds about four cups of fries or a quarter chicken. For two people every night, it’s tight.
What is the smallest air fryer that still works well?
The Dash Tasti-Crisp. Consumer Reports measured 2.4 quarts of usable space in a body under a cubic foot and still rated it CR Recommended.
Can a small air fryer cook a whole chicken?
A 2-quart model can’t; the Vortex Mini handles about a quarter chicken. Ninja says the Crispi’s 4-quart glass container fits a 4-pound chicken.
Do small air fryers use less electricity?
Per minute, yes, because they draw 1,000 to 1,500 watts. A 1,300-watt fryer running 15 minutes at full draw uses about 0.33 kWh, roughly 6 cents at the 2026 U.S. average of 18.2 cents per kWh (EIA forecast).
My take
For two people, buy the Cosori Lite 4-Qt. For one, the Instant Vortex Mini. If you care most about avoiding nonstick, the Ninja Crispi is the one to want.
Hi, I’m Dana Keller, and I run The Best Air Fryer by myself — no team behind a curtain, and nobody paying to be called “best.” I’m a home cook, not a test lab, so I lean on the people who are labs: America’s Test Kitchen, RTINGS, Consumer Reports, Tom’s Guide and a handful of others. Add in the manufacturers’ own spec sheets and a small mountain of owner reviews, and that’s how these picks get made. Anywhere a claim isn’t my own, I link to whoever said it first.
